About the 1968 Topps Baseball set

1968 Topps Baseball is a 598-card set issued in seven print series and numbered from #1 to #598 without a gap. Topps framed every card in a burlap-textured border: a color portrait sits inside it, the player's name is printed on the border below the photo, and his position and team sit in a colored circle at the lower right. The set opens with the twelve League Leaders cards (#1 NL Batting Leaders - Clemente, Gonzalez and Alou) and closes with #598 Jerry May; in between sit Mickey Mantle at #280, Willie Mays at #50, Hank Aaron at #110, Bob Clemente (as the card names him) at #150, Pete Rose at #230, Carl Yastrzemski at #250 the year after his Triple Crown and Roger Maris's last Topps card as an active player at #330.

The rookie class is headlined by #177 Mets Rookie Stars - Nolan Ryan with Jerry Koosman, the keystone of the set - and #247 Reds Rookie Stars, the Johnny Bench rookie, with #384 Reds Rookie Stars (Hal McRae) the other rookie card collectors chase; #45 Tom Seaver and #80 Rod Carew are second-year cards wearing the All-Star Rookie trophy. The subsets: the League Leaders (#1-12); the eight-card 1967 World Series story (#151-158), the Cardinals over the Red Sox; the 20 Sporting News All-Stars (#361-380), whose backs form a puzzle; thirty two-player Rookie Stars cards; three combo cards (#480 Manager's Dream, #490 Super Stars, #530 Bird Belters); twenty manager cards; the seven checklists, six of them in two states; and only thirteen team cards - the Red Sox, Cubs, Indians, Astros, Yankees, Giants and Senators have none. The League Leaders, World Series, Rookie Stars, team, All-Star and combo cards are printed horizontally; every other card is a portrait.

1968 was the Athletics' first season in Oakland, and #554 is the first Oakland Athletics team card. Scarcity is mild: no short-print list exists, #45 Seaver is the only card two catalogs call a double print, and the sixth and seventh series (#458-598) carry only a modest premium.

The checklist runs to 598 cards, 606 tracked states: eight cards carry a catalogued print variation (#10 American League 1967 Pitching Leaders: Lonborg On Back / Lonberg On Back; #107 2nd Series Checklist 110-196: Tan Wide Mesh / Brown Fine Mesh; #192 3rd Series Checklist 197-283: Special Bb Playing Card Game / Special Bb Playing Card; #278 4th Series Checklist 284-370: Copyright At Right / Copyright At Left; #356 5th Series Checklist 371-457: Head Centered W/Circle / Head Shifted Rt. W/Circle; #400 Mike McCormick: Yellow Team Letters / White Team Letters; #454 6th Series Checklist 458-533: Neck Chain Shows / No Neck Chain; #518 7th Series Checklist 534-598: #539 Is Maj. L. Rookies / #539 Is Amer. L. Rookies) and every state is tracked individually, so the base set counts 598 cards while the master set counts 606.

Print series

  • Series 1 (#1-109, 109 cards) – Twelve League Leaders cards #1-12 open the set (#10 AL Pitching Leaders exists with "Lonberg" and the corrected "Lonborg" on the back). #45 Tom Seaver (All-Star Rookie trophy, the only card the hobby catalogs tag as a double print), #50 Willie Mays, #67 Jim Kaat checklist - the only checklist without a variation - #80 Rod Carew and the #107 Marichal checklist (tan wide mesh / brown fine mesh). Forty-four numbers in this series have Milton Bradley Win-A-Card look-alikes.
  • Series 2 (#110-196, 87 cards) – #110 Hank Aaron, #150 Bob Clemente, the eight-card 1967 World Series story #151-158 (Games 1-7 plus "The Cardinals Celebrate!" - #151, #152 and #154 are the Brock, Yastrzemski and Gibson cards), #177 Mets Rookie Stars - Nolan Ryan with Jerry Koosman, the set keystone - and the #192 Yastrzemski checklist. Thirty-two more numbers have Milton Bradley look-alikes; the game pulled only from series 1 and 2.
  • Series 3 (#197-283, 87 cards) – #230 Pete Rose, #247 Reds Rookie Stars - the Johnny Bench rookie, #250 Carl Yastrzemski (his solo card the year after his 1967 Triple Crown), #278 Cepeda checklist (copyright right / left) and #280 Mickey Mantle.
  • Series 4 (#284-370, 87 cards) – #330 Roger Maris - his last Topps card as an active player - the #356 Holtzman checklist (head centered / shifted right) and the first ten Sporting News All-Stars #361-370 (Killebrew, Cepeda, Carew, Morgan, B. Robinson, Santo, Fregosi, Alley, Yastrzemski, Aaron); the All-Star run straddles the series-4/5 boundary.
  • Series 5 (#371-457, 87 cards) – The other ten Sporting News All-Stars #371-380 (Oliva, Brock, F. Robinson, Clemente, Freehan, McCarver, Horlen, Gibson, Peters, Holtzman), #384 Reds Rookie Stars with Hal McRae, #400 Mike McCormick with "GIANTS" in yellow or white letters, #408 Steve Carlton, #410 Ferguson Jenkins and the #454 Frank Robinson checklist.
  • Series 6 (#458-533, 76 cards) – The sixth print series: #480 Manager's Dream (Oliva / Cardenas / Clemente), #490 Super Stars (Killebrew / Mays / Mantle), #500 Frank Robinson, #518 Clete Boyer checklist (#539 as "Maj. L." or "Amer. L." Rookies), #520 Lou Brock and #530 Bird Belters (Frank and Brooks Robinson). Hobby sources disagree on where the high numbers begin - some start them here at #458.
  • Series 7 (#534-598, 65 cards) – The high numbers by the checklist-card division: #554 Oakland Athletics - the first Oakland team card - #571 Tony LaRussa (a Hall of Fame manager on an early playing card), #575 Jim Palmer and #598 Jerry May closing the set. The last two series together (#458-598) carry only a modest premium.

Scarcity, variations and errors

  • High Number (Series 7) (Cards 534-598) – The seventh print series, #534-598, by the checklist-card division. The last two series together (#458-598) carry only a modest premium; no short-print list exists.
  • Series 6 (Cards 458-533) – The sixth print series. Together with series 7 it forms the #458-598 block that hobby sources price at a modest premium; several catalogs call these cards high numbers outright.
  • Double print (Card 45) – Hobby catalogs tag #45 Tom Seaver as a double print - a card printed twice on the sheet - and tag no other 1968 card that way.
  • Short prints (No per-card flags) – No catalog tags any 1968 Topps card as a short print. Scarcity is stated series by series, with the #458-598 block carrying a modest premium.

The Milton Bradley look-alikes

The 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card board game reused 76 flagship numbers from the first two series - 44 from series 1 and 32 from series 2, including #177 Ryan and #45 Seaver - with yellow-tinged backs, a white line on the front edges and a thicker frame; the count is often quoted as 77 cards because both mesh states of the #107 checklist appear in the game. Those numbers are flagged on the checklist, but the game cards themselves are a different product. The yellow team-letter versions of #49 Ed Brinkman and #66 Casey Cox are game cards too, not Topps variations - while #400 Mike McCormick with white "GIANTS" letters is a genuine flagship variation whose yellow-letter state is the base.

What is not in the set

Items sometimes associated with 1968 Topps that are NOT part of the 598-card checklist (606 states).

  • #49 Ed Brinkman and #66 Casey Cox with yellow team letters – The yellow-letter versions are 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card game cards (both Senators appear in the game set), not flagship variations. PSA and TCDB catalog them anyway, so expect population rows for them; those slabs are excluded from the population counts here and never listed as states.
  • 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card look-alikes – Seventy-six flagship numbers (all in #1-196, including Ryan #177 and Seaver #45) have a game-card twin with a yellow-tinged back, white line on the front edges and a thicker frame. The look-alike flag marks those numbers; the game cards themselves are a different product.
  • #208 Willie Davis cartoon pair – TCDB catalogs the cartoon quote starting "A -" versus "Q -"; PSA does not split it, so it is tracked here as a single card.
  • #247 Johnny Bench "tne Reds" pair – TCDB catalogs a first-line "tne Reds" / "the Reds" pair on the Bench rookie; PSA does not split it, so the rookie is one card here.
  • #192 checklist third state – TCDB lists a third state (the full "B" on the cap); PSA carries two states (Playing Card Game / Playing Card), so only those two are tracked here.
  • 1968 Topps Game – The 33-card playing-card insert issued with series 3 and also sold boxed - a separate product that shares the year and brand in listings.
  • 1968 Topps Posters, Action All-Star Stickers, Plaks – Separate 1968 Topps products; not set members.
  • 1968 O-Pee-Chee – The Canadian parallel covers #1-196 and pollutes 1968 Topps searches; a different set.
  • 1968 Topps Venezuelan – The Venezuelan printing of the first 370 cards (#1-370) is a separate issue, so its cards are not tracked here.

This checklist was built card-by-card from the Trading Card Database (the number backbone and the variation states), reconciled against PSA CardFacts and the PSA set-registry listing (the wording of every tracked variation state is PSA's), the PSA and SGC population reports, Cardboard Connection, BaseballCardPedia, Baseball Almanac, Beckett's set profile and the Sports Collectors Digest article on the Milton Bradley yellow-back cards. Player identity, positions, Hall-of-Fame status and biographical detail come from Baseball-Reference, the Lahman Baseball Database, the SABR BioProject and Wikipedia. Where sources disagree, the contradiction is recorded. Compiled & maintained by T206Cards.com. Page last updated 2026-10-13.
