About Larry Jaster

Jaster's 1968 Topps #117, from print series 2, shows him with the Cardinals during his third full big league season, when he went 9-13 with a 3.50 ERA across 31 games and came within four outs of a perfect game against the Mets on May 31. He also pitched in relief that October as St. Louis lost the World Series to Detroit in seven games, surrendering a grand slam to Jim Northrup in Game Six.

Larry Jaster was a left-handed pitcher from Midland, Michigan, who reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in September 1965 after a bonus-baby signing and a bumpy minor league climb that once had him threatening to quit. He broke out as a 1966 rookie, going 11-5 and famously shutting out the pennant-winning Los Angeles Dodgers five straight times, a feat that had not been done consecutively in the post-1900 era and drew praise from Sandy Koufax. Jaster remained a Cardinals starter through 1968, pitched in relief in both the 1967 and 1968 World Series, then was taken by Montreal in the 1968 expansion draft. On April 14, 1969, he threw the first pitch in a major league regular-season game played in Canada. He closed his career with the Atlanta Braves in 1972 and later worked as a minor league pitching coach and coordinator.
