1968 Topps #84 Bob Tolan

About Bob Tolan
1968 Topps #84 comes from the set's first print series. Tolan played 92 games for St. Louis that season as the Cardinals repeated as National League champions, though they lost the World Series to the Detroit Tigers in seven games after leading three games to one.
Bobby Tolan broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 as a left-handed hitting outfielder, serving as a reserve on the pennant-winning 1967 and 1968 clubs before a trade to Cincinnati sent him to the Reds along with reliever Wayne Granger for Vada Pinson. Handed the everyday center field job, Tolan hit .305 in 1969 and followed with a career year in 1970, batting .316 and leading the National League with 57 stolen bases as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles injury cost him the 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win both the Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award. Later stops took him to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates before he closed his career with San Diego in 1979. Over 1,282 games he batted .265 with 86 home runs, 497 RBI and 193 stolen bases, and he also played a season in Japan for the Nankai Hawks. He is not a Hall of Famer.
