About Ron Willis

Card #68 is a Cardinals single from the set's first print series. With Bob Gibson and the rotation eating up most of the innings that year, Willis pitched less often but stayed reliable, going 2-3 with a 3.39 ERA and four saves over 48 games, including a stretch of twelve straight scoreless outings from May into June. He again pitched in three games of the World Series, a rematch loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Ron Willis was a sidearm right-handed reliever who spent parts of five seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1970, almost entirely out of the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen before finishing with the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres. A Kirkwood, Missouri high school standout who signed with the Cardinals after leading his team to a state title, Willis climbed the minor-league chain as an outfielder-turned-pitcher and reached St. Louis in September 1966. He became a durable, sinkerball setup man on the Cardinals' back-to-back pennant winners, pitching in three World Series games in both 1967 and 1968. Known in the clubhouse for his self-deprecating humor about his receding jawline, Willis battled elbow trouble that shortened his career after 1970. He finished 11-12 with a 3.32 ERA and 19 saves in 188 games, all in relief, and died in 1977 at age 34.
