1968 Topps #116 Ken McMullen

About Ken McMullen
Card #116 is a second-series card covering McMullen's 1967 for Washington: .245 with 16 home runs and a then-career-high 67 RBIs in 146 games for a club that went 76-85 and tied for sixth, the best finish the expansion Senators had managed. He hit the first two-homer game of his career on July 16, and during a career-best 19-game hitting streak he broke a 7-7 tie with a solo shot leading off the twentieth inning at Minnesota on August 9, sending the Senators to a 9-7 win after five hours and forty minutes.
Kenneth Lee McMullen signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Oxnard High School in California and reached the majors as a twenty-year-old September call-up in 1962, after two minor league seasons batting .285 with 42 home runs and 177 RBIs. He played parts of three seasons with Los Angeles - his first big league home run was a grand slam off St. Louis right-hander Ernie Broglio on the Fourth of July, 1963 - before a poor 1964 sent him back to the minors and then, that December, to the Washington Senators in a seven-player deal that also carried Frank Howard, Phil Ortega, Pete Richert and Dick Nen east for Claude Osteen and John Kennedy. McMullen took over Washington's third base job under manager Gil Hodges and held it through the rest of the decade, tying one American League fielding record at the position and setting another, and posting career highs of a .272 average and 87 runs batted in during 1969. Washington traded him to the California Angels in 1970; he returned to the Dodgers from 1973 through 1975, then finished with Oakland in 1976 and Milwaukee in 1977, ending on a pinch-hit home run in his last at-bat. He retired with 1,273 hits, 156 home runs and 606 RBIs across sixteen seasons, nearly all at third base.
