1968 Topps #31 Ed Stroud

About Ed Stroud
By 1968 Stroud was an everyday Washington outfielder, appearing in 105 games and batting .239 with 41 runs scored, the best average of his career to that point. His Topps card, #31, appeared in the set's first series and pictures him as a Senator.
Edwin Marvin Stroud, born October 31, 1939, in Lapine, Alabama, played six major league seasons as an outfielder for the Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators between 1966 and 1971. A left-handed hitter who threw right, Stroud signed with the White Sox as an undrafted free agent in 1963 and reached the majors in September 1966 after stealing 57 bases for the Indianapolis Indians of the Pacific Coast League, a mark that earned him the nickname "The Streak"; teammates also called him "The Creeper" for his distinctive walk. His best season came in 1970 with Washington, when he batted .266 with 29 stolen bases and 69 runs in 129 games. On July 4, 1968, he led the Senators to a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees with two doubles and two triples. Over 529 career games he hit .237 with 14 home runs, 100 RBI and 72 stolen bases. He finished his playing career in 1971 back with the White Sox. After baseball, Stroud settled in Warren, Ohio, where he served as the city's Equal Opportunity Coordinator until retiring in 1998; he died in Cleveland in 2012. He was never named to an All-Star team and is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
