About Casey Cox
Card #66, from series one, shows Cox with the Senators during a difficult 1968 season, when he spent most of the year with Buffalo of the International League before a late-season recall produced just four games in Washington. A similarly designed 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card game piece exists from the same year but is a separate, non-Topps issue.
Joseph Casey Cox, a 6-foot-5 right-hander born in Long Beach, California, pitched for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers, and New York Yankees from 1966 to 1973. Signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1962, he worked through several organizations before reaching the majors with Washington in 1966, debuting that April and striking out Al Kaline for his first career strikeout. Used almost exclusively out of the bullpen, Cox set career highs as a rookie with 66 appearances and seven saves. His best season came in 1969, when he went 12-7 with a 2.78 earned run average and helped the Senators to their only winning record in eleven seasons in Washington, earning praise from manager Ted Williams as one of the team's top two pitchers. Cox later pitched in the majors' first designated-hitter game in 1973 before retiring. Over 308 career games he posted a 39-42 record, 20 saves, and a 3.70 ERA. He died in Clearwater, Florida, in 2023.
