About Fred Valentine
Card #248 in Topps' 1968 series 3 print run, from Valentine's final major league season. He opened 1968 with Washington before being traded back to the Baltimore Orioles for Bruce Howard ahead of the June 15 trade deadline, closing out his seven-year big-league career as a reserve outfielder who batted .214 with 5 home runs in 84 games split between the two clubs.
Fred Valentine was a switch-hitting outfielder from Clarksdale, Mississippi, who starred at Tennessee State before signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 1956. He spent several seasons shuttling between the Orioles and their top farm clubs, appearing briefly in the majors in 1959 and 1963, before Washington purchased his contract that October. He became a regular for the Senators in 1964. His best season came in 1966, when he hit .276 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI while leading the club in runs, hits and doubles as a starting outfielder. He remained a fixture in the Washington outfield through 1967 before being traded back to Baltimore in mid-1968, closing out a seven-year major league career split between the two clubs. Over 533 games he batted .247 with 36 home runs, 138 RBI and 47 stolen bases. After his major league career he played a season in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers before retiring from professional baseball.
