1968 Topps #209 Tim Cullen

About Tim Cullen
Card 209 in Topps' third series shows Cullen with the Senators, the club he opened and closed the season with after a midseason round trip: traded to the Chicago White Sox in February for Ron Hansen, then swapped straight back to Washington for Hansen that August, making the two the only players traded for each other twice in one season. He played 87 games at second base and 33 at short, batting .230 with 3 homers and 29 RBI.
Tim Cullen was a scrappy utility infielder out of Santa Clara University, where he starred in both baseball and basketball before signing with the Boston Red Sox in 1964. Left unprotected, he was drafted by the Washington Senators and reached the majors in August 1966. Cullen made his mark that September 4 when manager Gil Hodges asked if he had ever played second base; Cullen bluffed yes and went on to spend most of his career there. He earned a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team in 1967 as a shortstop, and on August 18 of that year hit a dramatic walk-off three-run homer against Kansas City. Traded to the Chicago White Sox and back to Washington for Ron Hansen within the same 1968 season, Cullen later signed with Oakland as a free agent in 1972 and helped the Athletics reach the World Series, though he did not appear in the Series itself, before retiring. Over seven seasons he batted .220 with 9 home runs and 134 RBI in 700 games.
