About Dick Lines

Lines never played in 1968, but Topps issued him a card anyway: #291 in the fourth series, again showing him with Washington and carrying his 1967 numbers on the back. He had already appeared on cardboard the year before. The card closed out his run on Topps checklists, arriving after his final major league appearance that October.

Richard George Lines, born August 17, 1938 in Montreal, Quebec, emigrated to the United States as an infant and grew up in Midlothian, Virginia, graduating from Manchester High School. The left-handed pitcher, listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 175 pounds, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization before the 1957 season and spent eight years starting in the minor leagues before the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League converted him to relief work in 1965. That December, while working for a meat distributor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Lines fractured his big toe when he dropped 30 pounds of frozen spare ribs on his left foot, but he recovered in time to make the Washington Senators out of spring training in 1966. He pitched two full seasons in relief for Washington, appearing in 107 games without ever starting, and closed out his major league career with a 7-7 record, six saves, a 2.83 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 168 2/3 innings. He was never selected to an All-Star team and is not a Hall of Famer.
