1968 Topps #188 Cap Peterson

About Cap Peterson
Topps #188 is a second-series card. It shows Peterson still with the Senators, for whom he played 94 games that season, most of them in the outfield. His playing time and production had settled below his 1967 career year - the last full season he spent in Washington before moving on to Cleveland.
Charles Andrew "Cap" Peterson, nicknamed from the initials of his own name, was an outfielder from Tacoma, Washington, who broke in with the San Francisco Giants in September 1962 after a huge Double-A season at El Paso, where he hit .335 with 29 home runs. He split time in left and right field for the Giants through 1966 but never won a full-time job, and in December of that year he was part of the multi-player trade that sent Mike McCormick to San Francisco and brought Peterson to the Washington Senators. He posted his career high in games played with the 1967 Senators, then closed out his playing days with the Cleveland Indians in 1969, reunited there with former Giants manager Alvin Dark as a reserve outfielder and pinch-hitter. Over eight big-league seasons he batted .230 with 269 hits in 536 games. After baseball he ran his family's construction business back home in Tacoma, where he died in 1980 at age 37 following a long illness.
