About Bill Landis

In 1968, his second season in the Red Sox bullpen, Landis turned in his best major league work: 38 appearances, all but one in relief, a 3.15 ERA, three saves, and 59 strikeouts against 30 walks. His 1968 Topps #189, part of the set's second print series, is recognized as his rookie card. The issue also has a look-alike counterpart from the 1968 Milton Bradley card game, with a yellow-tinged card back.

William Henry Landis, a left-handed pitcher born October 8, 1942 in Hanford, California, reached the majors with the Kansas City Athletics in 1963, appearing in a single late-season relief outing before returning to the minor leagues for three more seasons. The Boston Red Sox claimed him in the 1966 Rule 5 Draft, and he spent parts of three seasons in their bullpen from 1967 through 1969. Control problems had shadowed much of his time in the minors, but Landis settled in with Boston, working almost exclusively in relief and posting a career-high three saves along the way. An Army Reserve commitment pulled him away from the Red Sox in the final days of the 1967 season, costing him a place on that pennant-winning club's World Series roster. His workload grew in 1969 before a sore arm cut into his effectiveness, and he closed out his major league career with a 9-8 record and a 4.46 ERA across 102 games.
