About Darrell Brandon
1968 Topps #26 shows Brandon with the Red Sox in the set's first print series. His playing time was limited that year by arm trouble; he appeared in just eight games for Boston, going 0-0 with a 6.39 ERA, and spent most of the season with Triple-A Louisville before Boston left him unprotected in that winter's expansion draft. A companion card using the same image appeared in the 1968 Milton Bradley board game, easily told apart by its yellow-tinged back.
Darrell G. Brandon, a right-handed pitcher from Nacogdoches, Texas, reached the major leagues in 1966 after eight seasons working his way up through four organizations. Signed originally as an outfielder, he converted to pitching in the low minors and picked up the nickname "Bucky" while playing class D ball, after buying a glove with the name carved into it from a teammate. Brandon debuted with the Boston Red Sox in 1966 and turned in his best season as a rookie, then remained with Boston through the pennant-winning 1967 season before a shoulder injury that September ended his year and kept him out of the World Series. Arm trouble limited him in 1968, and he moved on to the Seattle Pilots and then the Minnesota Twins. He found a steadier role as a reliever with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1971 to 1973, closing out a seven-year career spent with four American League and National League clubs. After retiring he ran a pitching school in New Jersey and later taught young pitchers in Massachusetts for more than two decades.
