About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset: twelve horizontal cards, each listing the top three or four finishers in one 1967 statistical category, the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

This 1968 Topps #10 League Leaders card recaps the American League's top three winners from the 1967 season: Jim Lonborg and Earl Wilson tied for the junior circuit lead with 22 wins apiece, while Dean Chance finished third with 20. Lonborg's Red Sox capped the pennant race that October in a season that also brought him the AL Cy Young Award. Wilson anchored a Detroit rotation that would go on to win the World Series the following year. Chance, who went 20-14 for the Twins that year, was outdueled by Lonborg on the final day of that same four-team pennant chase. The card's back text exists in two printing states, one carrying a misspelling of Lonborg's name; the corrected spelling is treated as the base printing here.

Jim Lonborg - Boston's 1967 Cy Young winner and Gentleman Jim, the soft-spoken Stanford product who outdueled Minnesota on the pennant's final day, then threw a World Series one-hitter before knee and shoulder injuries reshaped a career that ran through Milwaukee and Philadelphia. Earl Wilson, a Louisiana right-hander, no-hit the Angels for Boston in 1962, tied for the American League lead with 22 wins for Detroit in 1967, and pitched for the 1968 world champion Tigers while ranking among the best home-run-hitting pitchers the game has had. Dean Chance was the hard-throwing Angels right-hander who won the 1964 Cy Young Award at 20-9 with a 1.65 ERA, then threw a nine-inning no-hitter and a rain-shortened five-inning perfect game for Minnesota in 1967 on his way to Comeback Player of the Year honors.
