The story on this card
Card #2 in the 1968 Topps set is the American League Batting Leaders board, part of the League Leaders subset. Carl Yastrzemski tops the list after his 1967 Triple Crown season, when he hit .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs to carry the Red Sox to the pennant and win AL MVP almost unanimously. Behind him is Frank Robinson, who batted .311 for the Orioles in 1967 after having won his own Triple Crown the year before. Rounding out the trio is Al Kaline, who hit .308 for the Tigers in 1967 despite missing a month with a broken hand. The card presents the three as the league's top hitters from that season, with Boston, Baltimore and Detroit all represented on the front.
Carl Yastrzemski, 'Yaz,' gave Boston all 23 of his seasons, following Ted Williams in left field. He won the 1967 Triple Crown and MVP, three batting titles, seven Gold Gloves and 18 All-Star nods, and reached Cooperstown on the first ballot in 1989. Frank Robinson - Cincinnati's 1961 National League MVP, then Baltimore's 1966 American League Triple Crown winner, MVP and World Series MVP after one of baseball's most lopsided trades; nicknamed "the Judge," he later became the majors' first Black manager. Mr. Tiger: Al Kaline gave the Detroit Tigers 22 seasons, most of them in right field, won the American League batting title at 20 in 1955, took home ten Gold Gloves and finished with 3,007 hits and 399 home runs.
