The story on this card
1968 Topps #113 is another Rookie Stars card, teaming Matchick with Tigers pitching prospect Daryl Patterson. It fell in the year's second print series, issued as Matchick made the Tigers' roster out of spring training; he went on to hit .203 for the season but delivered the biggest hit of his career: a two-run, ninth-inning homer off Moe Drabowsky that beat Baltimore 5-4 on July 19, 1968, in front of 53,208 fans at Tiger Stadium, and he shared in Detroit's World Series championship that October. Collectors also note a yellow-tinged 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card game look-alike of this card. Utility infielder who spent parts of six seasons with five American League clubs from 1967 to 1972, best remembered for a walk-off two-run homer that beat Baltimore during Detroit's 1968 pennant run.
Patterson debuted for Detroit on April 10, 1968, and worked almost entirely in relief, going 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA, seven saves, and 49 strikeouts in 68 innings for the World Series champion Tigers. This 1968 Topps Rookie Stars card, number 113 from the set's second print series, pairs him with fellow Tigers rookie Tom Matchick. Patterson also pitched three scoreless innings for Detroit that fall in the World Series win over St. Louis. Right-handed reliever Daryl Patterson pitched five big-league seasons for Detroit, Oakland, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh from 1968 to 1974, throwing three scoreless innings for the champion Tigers in the 1968 World Series before a long postbaseball career at Pacific Gas and Electric.
