About Woody Fryman

Traded to Philadelphia after the 1967 season in the Jim Bunning deal, Fryman opened 1968 in dazzling form, a 10-5 record and 1.61 ERA that earned him his first All-Star selection as the Phillies' lone representative. He cooled over the second half but still finished 12-14 with a 2.78 ERA. This series-two card has a look-alike among that year's Milton Bradley Win-A-Card game pieces, which carry a yellow-tinged back.

Woodie Fryman was a left-handed pitcher from Ewing, Kentucky, who grew up working his family's farm and turned down early bonus offers before signing with the Pirates in 1965. He broke in in 1966 and worked as both starter and reliever across 18 major league seasons for six clubs. An arthritic elbow diagnosed during his Philadelphia years never fully left him, yet he kept pitching into his forties, converting to a full-time reliever with Montreal late in his run. He made two All-Star teams, helped Detroit reach the 1972 ALCS and Montreal the 1981 NLCS, and finished with 141 wins, 58 saves and a 3.77 ERA over 625 games. Teammates and opponents alike praised his fastball and competitiveness; Larry Bowa once said hitting him was like eating soup with a fork. He retired to his Kentucky farm and was later honored by the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
