The story on this card

Card #9 in the 1968 Topps set is a League Leaders subset card naming the National League's top pitchers by wins for 1967: Mike McCormick of the Giants, Ferguson Jenkins of the Cubs, Jim Bunning of the Phillies, and Claude Osteen of the Dodgers. McCormick led the NL with 22 wins and won the NL Cy Young Award, the first won by a Giants pitcher. Jenkins went 20-13, the first of six straight 20-win seasons, and finished tied for second in that year's Cy Young vote behind McCormick. Bunning, in his fourth year with Philadelphia, posted a 17-15 record with a career-best 2.29 ERA, leading the league in shutouts, starts, and innings pitched. Osteen went 17-17 for the Dodgers, earning his first All-Star selection. The card is from print series 1 of the 1968 set.

Mike McCormick was a teenage bonus baby who led the National League in ERA in 1960, lost his fastball to a wrecked shoulder, then rebuilt himself on a screwball and won the 1967 Cy Young Award for the Giants at twenty-nine. Fergie Jenkins was the control artist at the front of the Cubs rotation, winning 20 games in six straight seasons and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award on his way to 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and a 1991 Hall of Fame plaque. Jim Bunning was a hard-throwing right-hander who threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a 1964 perfect game for the Phillies, and later served as a US Senator from Kentucky. Claude Osteen - a durable Dodgers left-hander who turned a 1964 trade out of Washington into nine strong seasons, three All-Star nods and the shutout that flipped the 1965 World Series, finishing 196-195 over 18 years.
