1968 Topps #65 John Roseboro

About John Roseboro
#65 comes from the first series of the 1968 set and still shows him as a Los Angeles Dodger, although the Dodgers had traded him to Minnesota on November 28, 1967. The Year of the Pitcher used him the way it used everyone: .216 in 135 games. Owner Calvin Griffith, whom Roseboro later called the least likeable person he met in baseball, cut his pay for the next season anyway.
John Roseboro was an American catcher who played in the major leagues from 1957 through 1970, almost all of it with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Born May 13, 1933 in Ashland, Ohio, he signed with Brooklyn in 1952 and spent five years in the minors before reaching Brooklyn in June 1957. He inherited the Dodgers' catching job in 1958 after a car accident ended Roy Campanella's career, and he held it through 1967. A four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, he caught four Dodgers pennant winners and three championship clubs, and Sandy Koufax said that with Roseboro out there he never felt alone. So quiet that the game nicknamed him "Gabby," he is still best known for August 22, 1965, when Giants pitcher Juan Marichal hit him over the head with a bat. Minnesota acquired him after the 1967 season, and he caught the 1969 American League West champion Twins before a final year with the Washington Senators. He finished with 1,585 games, a .249 average, 104 home runs and 548 runs batted in, and died in Los Angeles on August 16, 2002.
