About this card

Only thirteen team cards were issued in 1968; the Red Sox, Cubs, Indians, Astros, Yankees, Giants and Senators have none. #554 is the first Oakland Athletics team card - the A's moved from Kansas City for 1968.

The story on this card

This team card reports on the 1967 Dodgers, a club still adjusting to life after Sandy Koufax's retirement. Walter Alston's group finished 73-89, eighth in the National League and 28.5 games behind the pennant-winning Cardinals, the franchise's worst showing since the war years. Offense was thin, and a series of trades that sent out Tommy Davis and Maury Wills failed to fill the gap. The pitching staff still had bite: Don Drysdale went 13-16 with a sharp 2.74 ERA, and young Don Sutton logged a full season on the mound after his strong rookie year, giving the 1967 staff two future Hall of Famers alongside Alston, who also reached Cooperstown as a manager. It was a club in transition, playing out the string at Dodger Stadium a full season removed from its last pennant.
