The story on this card

This card opens the 1968 Topps set, a print series 1 issue, with the NL batting race from 1967, a season Bob Clemente owned. Clemente hit .357 for Pittsburgh, edging Tony Gonzalez of the Phillies at .339 and Pittsburgh teammate Matty Alou at .338. It was Clemente's fourth NL batting crown, a career-high average that had general managers at that winter's meetings naming him the best player in the game. Gonzalez, a Cuban-born outfielder up through Cincinnati's chain before starring in Philadelphia's outfield, posted the finest average of his own career. Alou, reshaped by Pirates manager Harry Walker into a slap-and-bunt leadoff man, finished third while platooning with Manny Mota.

Pittsburgh's right fielder for eighteen seasons, Roberto Clemente won four National League batting titles and twelve straight Gold Gloves, was the 1966 NL Most Valuable Player and the 1971 World Series MVP, and died flying earthquake relief in 1972. Tony Gonzalez worked the Phillies' outfield through most of the 1960s, a left-handed line-drive hitter who batted .339 in 1967 to finish second to Roberto Clemente in the National League and later hit .357 for Atlanta in the 1969 Championship Series. Matty Alou was the middle Alou brother, a slap-hitting outfielder whose swing was remade by Pirates manager Harry Walker into the 1966 National League batting title, won over brother Felipe, the first of four straight .330-plus seasons, and a 1972 World Series ring with Oakland.
