The story on this card
This League Leaders card sums up the National League strikeout race from 1967. Jim Bunning of the Phillies topped the group with 253 strikeouts, backed by a career-best 2.29 ERA and a league-leading six shutouts. Right behind him was the Cubs' Ferguson Jenkins, who fanned 236 in his first full year as a starter while going 20-13 and finishing second in Cy Young voting. The Giants' Gaylord Perry rounded out the group, striking out 230 batters in a 15-17 season built on a stingy 2.61 ERA. All three were established workhorses at the top of their league, and the card lines their photos above the shared strikeout totals from that race.
Jim Bunning was a hard-throwing right-hander who threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a 1964 perfect game for the Phillies, and later served as a US Senator from Kentucky. Fergie Jenkins was the control artist at the front of the Cubs rotation, winning 20 games in six straight seasons and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award on his way to 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and a 1991 Hall of Fame plaque. Gaylord Perry was a cunning San Francisco Giants right-hander notorious for the spitball he spent two decades denying, a five-time All-Star who won Cy Young Awards in both leagues and finished with 314 wins and 3,534 strikeouts before his 1991 Hall of Fame election.
