About Gene Mauch

Topps put Gene Mauch at 122 in its second series for 1968, and the season behind the card was his last full one in Philadelphia. The 1967 Phillies finished 82-80, fifth in the National League, nineteen and a half games behind the champion Cardinals, and the franchise would not finish above .500 again until 1975. Mauch was let go during the 1968 season with the club sitting at 27-27. He left holding the Phillies managerial records for wins and losses; his 646 wins stood until Charlie Manuel passed him in 2011, and his 684 losses still lead the club list.

Gene Mauch built one of the longest managerial careers in major league history despite never playing more than 72 games in a big league season himself. Born in Salina, Kansas, and raised mostly in Los Angeles, he broke in as a light-hitting infielder with six clubs over parts of nine seasons, batting .239, before turning to managing and taking the Minneapolis Millers to the 1958 Junior World Series title. Hired to run the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960 at 34, the youngest manager in the majors, he lifted a last-place club into a contender with his signature approach: bunting, base-to-base advancement, defense and speed, a brand of play called small ball. He managed the Phillies through parts of nine seasons, then ran the expansion Montreal Expos, the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels, retiring in 1988 with 1,902 wins, eighth on the all-time list at the time. Three times his clubs came within a single victory of the World Series; none won a pennant, a distinction that shadowed an otherwise widely respected career. Montreal later placed him in the Expos Hall of Fame.
