About Gary Sutherland
In his third Phillies season, Sutherland was a true utilityman, appearing at second, short, third and both outfield corners while hitting .275 over 138 at-bats. Card #98, from the first print series, pictures him with the Phillies. This printing shares its design with the 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card game piece, identifiable by a yellow-tinged card back.
Gary Sutherland, nicknamed "Sudsy," was a middle infielder who played 13 major league seasons from 1966 to 1978 with the Phillies, Expos, Astros, Tigers, Brewers, Padres and Cardinals. A USC Trojan under coach Rod Dedeaux, he signed with Philadelphia as an amateur free agent in 1964 and reached the majors in 1966. Sutherland split time between shortstop, second base and the outfield early in his career before settling in as a regular second baseman, leading National League second basemen with 110 double plays turned in 1969, the Montreal Expos' inaugural season. As the Expos' first-ever starting second baseman, he scored the franchise's first run and recorded the first putout in a regular-season major league game played in Canada. He went on to become Detroit's starting second baseman for three seasons in the mid-1970s. Over his career he hit .243 with 754 hits in 1,031 games. After retiring he worked for years as a scout and front-office assistant for the Los Angeles Angels.
