1968 Topps #226 Jimmie Price

About Jimmie Price
This card catches him as Bill Freehan's backup catcher on the 1968 World Series champion Tigers. Price appeared in 64 games that season, batting .174 with 3 home runs, then saw two pinch-hit at-bats in the Series itself as Detroit beat St. Louis in seven games.
Jimmie William Price, born October 13, 1941, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was a catcher who spent his entire five-year major league career with the Detroit Tigers from 1967 to 1971. A three-sport star at Hershey High School, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960 and spent seven seasons in Pittsburgh's farm system, earning Carolina League Player of the Year honors at Kinston in 1963. After losing the battle for a roster spot in spring training 1967, Price was sold to Detroit, where he served as backup catcher to All-Star Bill Freehan for the rest of his career. He appeared in 261 games over five seasons, batting .214 with 18 home runs, and was part of the Tigers' 1968 World Series championship team, though he saw only two pinch-hit at-bats in that Series. After retiring following the 1971 season, Price built a long career in Detroit sports broadcasting, working Tigers games on television and radio for nearly three decades, including as a longtime broadcast partner of Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell.
