The story on this card
This team card reports the 1967 Detroit Tigers, who went 91-71 under manager Mayo Smith and finished tied for second in the American League with the Minnesota Twins, just one game behind the pennant-winning Boston Red Sox in a race that came down to the final day. Al Kaline hit .308 with 25 home runs and 78 RBIs in right field, while Eddie Mathews, picked up from Houston in August, spent the stretch run at first base and third, batting .231 with 6 homers in 36 games as a Tiger. Bill Freehan anchored the catching staff and Willie Horton patrolled left field. The 1967 club would build on this near-miss to win the World Series the following year.
