About Mickey Stanley
Stanley helped the Tigers win the 1968 American League pennant, batting .259 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs while playing a perfect fielding percentage in center field and earning his first Gold Glove Award. Late that season manager Mayo Smith moved him to shortstop, a position he had never played professionally, so Detroit's outfield bats could all stay in the World Series lineup; Stanley started there throughout the Series as the Tigers beat St. Louis in seven games. This card, #129 in the second print series, shows him with Detroit. A Milton Bradley board-game card of the same player copies this card's front with a yellow-tinged back.
Mitchell Jack Stanley grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, starring in baseball, basketball, and football at Ottawa Hills High School before signing with the Detroit Tigers in 1960. He spent four minor league seasons, including a stint alongside future Tiger outfield mates Jim Northrup and Willie Horton, before debuting in September 1964. Stanley became Detroit's regular center fielder and developed into one of the game's finest defenders, winning four Gold Glove Awards and finishing his career ranked among the all-time leaders in outfield fielding percentage. His signature moment came in 1968, when manager Mayo Smith shifted him from center field to shortstop, a position he had never played professionally, so all three power-hitting outfielders could stay in the lineup for the World Series; Detroit won the championship over St. Louis. Stanley played all 15 of his major league seasons with the Tigers, retiring after 1978, then became a builder and real estate developer in Livingston County, Michigan.
