About Pat Dobson

Coming off his 1967 rookie season in Detroit, Dobson worked closely with pitching coach Johnny Sain to refine his slider and settled into a swingman role for the Tigers, making both starts and relief appearances. He led the pitching staff with 47 appearances, went 5-8 with a 2.66 ERA and seven saves, and pitched in Detroit's World Series win over St. Louis that fall. This card comes from the first print series.

Pat Dobson was a right-handed pitcher who spent eleven seasons in the majors with Detroit, San Diego, Baltimore, Atlanta, the New York Yankees and Cleveland. He broke in with the Tigers in 1967 after years of grinding through the minors and winter ball, working mostly in relief before Detroit's 1968 championship season, in which he appeared in the World Series against St. Louis. Traded to San Diego, he became a full-time starter for the first time in 1970. A trade to Baltimore paid off immediately: in 1971 Dobson won twenty games as one of four Orioles pitchers to reach that mark, a feat matched only once before in major league history, and he made the All-Star team the following season. Later stops with the Yankees produced a nineteen-win season in 1974. He finished his career with 122 wins, 1,301 strikeouts and a 3.54 ERA over 414 games, and went on to coach pitching for several organizations after retiring as a player.
