About Ron Davis

Davis opened 1968 with the Astros, then was traded to the Cardinals that June for Dick Simpson and Hal Gilson, finishing the year with a combined .203 average across both clubs. He reached the World Series with St. Louis that fall, going hitless in seven at-bats over two games. This 1968 Topps card, #21 from the first print series, shows him with the Astros.

Ron Davis was an outfielder who signed with the Colt .45s as an amateur free agent in 1961 out of Duke University. He debuted in the majors on August 1, 1962 at age 20, going 1-for-4 against the Braves, but appeared in only six games that year before returning to the minors. He came back to Houston in 1966 and settled in as a regular outfielder over the next several seasons, playing for the Astros, then splitting 1968 between Houston and St. Louis after a midseason trade, and closing out his career in 1969 with the Pirates following an offseason trade. His best season came in 1967, when he set career highs in games, hits, home runs and RBI. He reached the World Series with the Cardinals in 1968, going hitless in two games. Davis played five major league seasons in all, finishing with a .233 career batting average, then spent 1970 and 1971 in the minors with Pittsburgh's Columbus/Charleston Triple-A affiliate before his playing career ended. He died in Houston in 1992 at age 50.
