1968 Topps #207 Carroll Sembera

About Carroll Sembera
Card #207 reflects a season Sembera spent off major league rosters between his heavy 1967 workload with Houston and his 1969 move to the expansion Montreal Expos; he did not appear in a big-league game in 1968. He resurfaced the following spring as part of the Expos' inaugural pitching staff.
Carroll Sembera was a right-handed relief pitcher from Shiner, Texas who spent five seasons in the majors with the Houston Astros and Montreal Expos. He debuted with Houston in 1965 at age 23 and became a steady bullpen arm, topping out with career highs across the board in 1967: 45 games, 59.2 innings and 15 games finished. After his Astros run ended, he was part of the 1969 Expos' inaugural roster and picked up the first save in franchise history on opening day that season. His final major league appearances came with Montreal in 1970. Over 99 career games he went 3-11 with a 4.70 ERA and six saves, working almost exclusively out of the bullpen. He also saw brief duty as a pinch hitter, collecting two hits in 15 career at-bats. After his playing days, Sembera moved into scouting, working for the Major League Scouting Bureau and later spending eleven years with the Seattle Mariners organization. He died in his hometown of Shiner in 2005 at age 63.
