The story on this card
In 1968, his first full major-league season, Leonhard worked as both a starter and reliever for Baltimore, finishing 7-7 with a 3.13 ERA over 28 appearances, including a one-hit shutout of Detroit and a two-hit shutout of the Chicago White Sox. His 1968 Topps #56, part of the set's first series and recognized as his rookie card, is a Rookie Stars issue pairing him with fellow young Oriole Dave May. Dave Leonhard was a right-handed pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles from 1967 to 1972, a Johns Hopkins graduate who worked as both a starter and reliever and appeared in the 1969 and 1971 World Series.
May spent 1968 as a young reserve outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles, appearing in 61 games in the field and batting .191 as he worked to establish himself in the majors. His 1968 Topps card, number 56, is an Orioles Rookie Stars subset issue from the set's first print series, a standard-series card; shared with fellow Baltimore prospect Dave Leonhard, it stands as his recognized rookie card. A Delaware-born outfielder who reached the 1973 All-Star Game with Milwaukee and was later dealt to Atlanta in the trade that brought Hank Aaron back to Milwaukee.
