1968 Topps #186 Eddie Watt

About Eddie Watt
Card 186, from the set's second print series, captures Watt in his first year as the Orioles' primary closer. He worked a career-high 59 games that season, tying for fifth in the American League, with a 5-5 record, 11 saves and a 2.27 ERA over 83.1 innings. Midseason, longtime manager Hank Bauer was fired and Earl Weaver, Watt's former minor league skipper at Elmira, took over the Orioles.
Eddie Watt was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of ten seasons in the majors, mostly as a mainstay of the Baltimore Orioles bullpen from 1966 to 1973. A short, sturdy Iowan out of Iowa State Teachers College, he signed with Baltimore in 1961 and worked his way up through Appleton, Aberdeen, Elmira and Rochester, throwing two no-hitters at Elmira in 1965. Used almost exclusively as a reliever after his rookie year, he led the Orioles pitching staff in appearances four straight seasons and helped Baltimore to four pennants and two World Series titles. He posted a 38-36 career record with 80 saves and a 2.91 ERA over 411 games, going 37-34 with 74 saves as an Oriole. He finished his playing career with the Phillies and Cubs before a long second act as a minor league manager and pitching coach, including several seasons in the Atlanta Braves system.
