1968 Topps #204 Andy Etchebarren

About Andy Etchebarren
In 1968 Etchebarren's playing time fell to 74 games as new manager Earl Weaver began platooning him with left-handed-hitting catcher Elrod Hendricks, an arrangement that would continue through much of his remaining Baltimore career. His 1968 Topps card, #204, shows him with the Orioles.
Andy Etchebarren was a catcher for the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers across 15 major league seasons from 1962 to 1978. Signed by the Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1961, the Whittier, California native of Basque descent made his debut in 1962 catching Dave McNally's shutout, then spent several more seasons in the minors before winning the Orioles' starting job. Known for his defense and ability to handle a pitching staff, Etchebarren was a two-time All-Star and helped Baltimore capture four American League pennants and two World Series championships. He also helped rescue teammate Frank Robinson, who could not swim, from a swimming pool during a 1966 team party. After his playing career ended in 1978, Etchebarren remained in baseball for decades as a minor league manager and coach, including a stint as Orioles bench coach. He died in 2019.
