About Ted Uhlaender

In the pitcher-dominated 1968 season Uhlaender turned in his finest offensive year to that point, hitting .283 with a career-high 21 doubles for the Twins. Card #28, from series 1, is a solo Twins issue capturing him as an established regular in center field.

Ted Uhlaender was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent eight seasons in the majors with the Twins, Indians and Reds from 1965 to 1972. A Baylor product signed by Twins scout Buddy Hancken, he worked his way through the minors as a converted catcher before winning the Pacific Coast League batting title at Denver in 1965. He took over as Minnesota's starting center fielder in mid-1966 and held the job for four seasons, posting his best average of that stretch, .283, in the pitcher-dominated 1968 season. Known for smooth, effortless range in center, he led American League center fielders in fielding percentage in 1967. Minnesota traded him to Cleveland after the 1969 season in a deal that also sent Graig Nettles and Dean Chance away for Luis Tiant and Stan Williams. He closed his career as a reserve outfielder with the pennant-winning 1972 Reds. He finished with a .263 career average and later coached and scouted in professional baseball. He is the father of Olympic skeleton competitor Katie Uhlaender.
