About Joe Verbanic

Verbanic spent all of 1968 with the Yankees, setting career highs with 40 appearances and 11 starts. He threw his second career shutout, blanking the White Sox on September 10, and finished 6-7 with a 3.15 ERA and four saves in relief of AL Rookie of the Year Stan Bahnsen. This card, #29, captures him coming off that full workhorse season before the rotator cuff injury that sidelined him in 1969.

Joe Verbanic was a right-handed pitcher from Washington, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Phillies out of Hopewell High School in 1961 and climbed steadily through their farm system, reaching Triple-A by 1965. He debuted with Philadelphia in July 1966, then was traded to the Yankees that December for veteran Pedro Ramos. Inserted into New York's rotation in 1967, he won his first two starts, including a complete-game shutout of Washington, and finished 4-3 with a 2.80 ERA. He worked a career-high 40 games in 1968, throwing another shutout against the White Sox, but a rotator cuff injury wiped out his entire 1969 season. He returned briefly in 1970 before arm trouble ended his major league career. Verbanic later managed in the minors and settled in Eugene, Oregon, running a fire-protection business for decades.
