The story on this card
Bahnsen's mediocre spring training sent him back to Triple-A Syracuse for all of 1967, so he opened that year off the Yankees roster rather than as a rookie in New York. Topps still carried him as a prospect on this Yankees Rookie Stars card, from the set's third print series, sharing it with catcher Frank Fernandez. His rookie card had already appeared in the 1967 set. Right-hander who won the 1968 AL Rookie of the Year award with the Yankees, then anchored a heavy three-man rotation with the White Sox before closing his career as a Montreal Expos reliever.
Card #214, a series-3 'Yankees 1968 Rookie Stars,' teams Fernandez with right-hander Stan Bahnsen, whose seven-inning perfect game at Triple-A Syracuse he had caught in 1967. The card reports that September's cup of coffee: 6-for-28 in nine games, the lone home run off 21-year-old Catfish Hunter in the season finale, and seven complete games caught without an error or a passed ball. Two years after his rookie card, Fernandez is still a Rookie Star on cardboard. Frank Fernandez was a strong-armed Yankees catcher of the late 1960s, a backup to Jake Gibbs who walked 164 times against 145 career hits and hit 39 home runs while batting .199 over six seasons.
