About this card

The story on this card

This card is part of the 1968 Topps World Series subset, part of the set's second print series, and shows Boston Red Sox shortstop Rico Petrocelli. It recalls Game 6 of the 1967 World Series at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox faced elimination down three games to two against the Cardinals. Petrocelli opened the scoring with a second-inning home run over the Green Monster. St. Louis answered with two runs in the third, Julian Javier scoring on a Lou Brock single and Brock himself scoring on a Curt Flood single, but in the bottom of the fourth Carl Yastrzemski, Reggie Smith, and Petrocelli homered in succession, a World Series record three home runs by one team in a single inning. Boston held on for an 8-4 win, tying the Series at three games apiece and forcing a decisive Game 7, which St. Louis won behind Bob Gibson.
