1968 Topps #296 Byron Browne

About Byron Browne
Browne opened 1968 with the Cubs before being traded to the Houston Astros on May 4, 1968, in exchange for Aaron Pointer, and went on to appear in just 10 games for Houston, collecting three hits in 19 at-bats. His 1968 Topps #296, a fourth-series card, still pictures him with the Chicago Cubs.
Byron Browne was an outfielder from St. Joseph, Missouri, signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in September 1962 and drafted by the Chicago Cubs from the Pirates in the 1963 first-year draft. He debuted with the Cubs on September 9, 1965, facing Sandy Koufax during the future Hall of Famer's perfect game. Browne split parts of three seasons with the Cubs before being traded to the Houston Astros in May 1968 for Aaron Pointer. The Cardinals purchased him in February 1969, and that October he moved to the Philadelphia Phillies in the multi-player deal that sent Curt Flood, Tim McCarver, and Joe Hoerner to Philadelphia for Dick Allen, Cookie Rojas, and Jerry Johnson. He closed out his career with the Phillies through 1972, finishing with a .236 average, 30 home runs, and 102 RBI over 349 games. His son, Byron Browne Jr., later spent ten seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system.
