1968 Topps #297 Russ Gibson

About Russ Gibson
In his second season with Boston, Gibson had a standout day on June 23, 1968, going 4-for-4 against the White Sox with all four hits coming off knuckleballers Wilbur Wood and Hoyt Wilhelm. He also made the only career appearance at a position besides catcher, playing two innings at first base that August. For the season he batted .225 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 76 games. His 1968 Topps card, #297, comes from the set's fourth print series.
Russ Gibson was a catcher from Fall River, Massachusetts, who spent ten seasons in the minor leagues before finally reaching the majors with his hometown Boston Red Sox in 1967 at age 27. He caught Billy Rohr's near no-hitter in his big league debut and helped Boston to the pennant that year, appearing in the World Series against St. Louis. Gibson shared catching duties in Boston through 1969, his best season, batting .251 with career highs in games, hits and runs. His contract was sold to the San Francisco Giants before the 1970 season, and he served as a backup catcher there through 1972. Over a six-year career he batted .228 with eight home runs and 78 RBI in 264 games. He retired after the 1972 season and later lived in Swansea, Massachusetts, until his death in 2008.
