The story on this card
Korince appears on 1968 Topps #447, a series 5 Rookie Stars card shared with fellow pitcher Fred Lasher, both cataloged as Tigers pitching prospects even as Korince opened the year fighting for a bullpen spot at Triple-A Toledo rather than with Detroit. He had already appeared on two 1967 Topps Rookie Stars cards, #72 and #526; this one captures him after his brief big league stint the year before. Canadian right-hander George Korince pitched eleven games for the Detroit Tigers in 1966-67, earning his only major league win in relief at Fenway Park before control problems and an ailing arm ended his career in the minors.
1968 Topps #447, a Rookie Stars card shared with George Korince from the fifth print series, arrived as Lasher settled into Detroit's bullpen for a pennant-winning, World Series championship season. He went 5-1 with a 3.33 ERA and five saves in 34 relief appearances, then pitched two scoreless innings in Game Four of the World Series against the Cardinals. A sidearm reliever nicknamed "Whip," Fred Lasher was a steady Tigers bullpen arm through Detroit's 1968 championship season, and his only career start, in 1970, erupted into a brawl with Tony Conigliaro.
