1968 Topps #309 Ken Henderson

About Ken Henderson
This card comes from a season in which Henderson played just three games for the Giants, spending the bulk of the year at Phoenix, where he was finally hitting for power before a heel injury sustained rounding first base cost him two months. He still finished with 11 home runs, 60 RBI, 21 doubles and five triples at Phoenix, numbers that pointed toward the power the Giants had projected when they signed him. The card is part of the fourth print series.
Ken Henderson was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent sixteen big-league seasons with seven clubs from 1965 to 1980, starting with the San Francisco Giants and finishing with the Chicago Cubs. A San Diego prospect who signed with the Giants for a $50,000 bonus in 1964, he arrived under a heavy label as a possible successor to Willie Mays, an expectation he later called unfair to carry. Slowed early by leg injuries and a crowded Giants outfield, he broke through in 1970 with a career-best .294 average, 17 homers and 88 RBI, and helped San Francisco reach the 1971 NL Championship Series. He was later dealt to the White Sox, where he had his best power season in 1974, then moved through the Braves, Rangers, Mets, Reds and Cubs before retiring in 1980 with 1,168 career hits and 122 home runs.
