About Bobby Etheridge
Etheridge's 1968 Topps card, #126 in the set's second series, arrived after his 1967 rookie season with the San Francisco Giants, when he appeared in 40 games as a reserve third baseman behind Jim Ray Hart, batting .226 with 15 RBIs. The card carries a Topps All-Star Rookie trophy, marking his place on Topps' 1967 All-Star Rookie team, a recognized rookie card for the Giants infielder.
Bobby Lamar Etheridge was a third baseman who reached the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants after two seasons of college baseball at Mississippi State University, then signed with the Giants as an amateur free agent in 1964. He spent three seasons in the Giants' farm system before debuting in the majors on July 16, 1967, entering as a late-inning defensive replacement against the Chicago Cubs at Candlestick Park. Etheridge spent his rookie season playing behind established third baseman Jim Ray Hart, appearing in 40 games and earning a spot on Topps' 1967 All-Star Rookie team. He spent the entire 1968 season with the Pacific Coast League's Phoenix Giants before rejoining San Francisco for the 1969 opening day, again working as a reserve infielder. At the close of that season he was traded, along with Bob Barton and Ron Herbel, to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Frank Reberger. Etheridge continued playing in the minor leagues, later in the New York Mets organization, through 1973 without another major league appearance.
