About Paul Lindblad

Card 127 is Lindblad's first as an Oakland Athletic, following the franchise's 1968 move from Kansas City; it belongs to the second series. A yellow-tinged-back printing of this card also exists, issued as part of the 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card board game. On the mound that year Lindblad settled into a full-time relief role, going 4-3 with a 2.40 ERA over 47 games, striking out 42 in 56.1 innings and saving two.

Paul Aaron Lindblad, born August 9, 1941 in Chanute, Kansas, was a left-handed pitcher who spent 14 major league seasons, 1965 through 1978, almost entirely as a reliever. He debuted with the Kansas City Athletics on September 15, 1965, followed the franchise to Oakland in 1968, and later pitched for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. After beginning his career as a minor league starter, he moved into middle and long relief and set a major league record for a pitcher by playing 385 consecutive games without an error, a streak that ran from 1966 to 1974. Lindblad won three World Series titles, with the 1973 and 1974 Oakland Athletics and the 1978 New York Yankees, and earned the win in Game Three of the 1973 World Series against the New York Mets, working two shutout innings and getting the last pitching matchup of Willie Mays's career. He finished with a 68-63 record, a 3.29 ERA, 64 saves and 671 strikeouts. After retiring he worked as a minor league pitching coach and as a custom home builder. He died January 1, 2006, in Arlington, Texas.
