The story on this card
After a 1967 rookie season split between Kansas City and Triple-A Vancouver, going 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA and two saves in 15 games, Rodriguez earned his first career win that August against Detroit, outdueling a lineup featuring Al Kaline and Eddie Mathews. Topps featured him on 1968 card #199, a print series 3 Athletics Rookie Stars card, he shares with Darrell Osteen, a recognized rookie card, though he spent that season back at Vancouver. Venezuelan right-hander who converted from catcher to pitcher in the Kansas City Athletics' system and later became a decorated Venezuelan winter-league closer known as Pluto.
Topps' 1968 set lists Osteen with the Oakland Athletics organization on card #199, a Rookie Stars card in the third series he shares with fellow Athletics prospect Roberto Rodriguez; his own first Topps card came two years earlier, 1966 #424. Osteen did not appear in a major league game in 1968, returning to the majors with the Athletics only in 1970, when he closed out his career after parts of four big league seasons. Right-handed reliever Darrell Osteen pitched for the Cincinnati Reds (1965-67) and Oakland Athletics (1970), posting a 1-4 career record over 29 games; he is not a Hall of Famer.
