About Sal Bando

In the Athletics' first season in Oakland, Bando won the third-base job outright and played all 162 games, batting .251 with 9 home runs and a team-second 67 RBIs while showing off the strong, low throwing arm that drew comparisons to Brooks Robinson. This plain-number card, not his rookie issue, came a year after his 1967 Rookie Stars debut. A look-alike with a yellow-tinged back came in the 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card board game, a different product from the Topps card.

Sal Bando was a hard-nosed third baseman who anchored the Oakland Athletics dynasty of the early 1970s, serving as team captain from 1969 onward. Drafted by the Kansas City Athletics out of Arizona State, where he had been the 1965 College World Series Most Outstanding Player, Bando debuted in September 1966 and became Oakland's everyday third baseman by 1968. A four-time All-Star (1969, 1972-1974), he finished as high as second in AL MVP voting and helped the A's win three straight World Series titles from 1972 to 1974, playing in every one. He closed his sixteen-year career with the Milwaukee Brewers from 1977 to 1981, finishing with a .254 average, 242 home runs and 1,039 RBIs in 2,019 games. After retiring he worked in the Brewers front office, eventually serving as the club's general manager from 1991 to 1999. He was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022, but he is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member.
