About Rick Monday

Card #282 reflects Monday's first All-Star season, 1968, his first full year after the Athletics' move west to Oakland; he hit .274 with 8 home runs and 49 RBI while playing 144 games in the outfield. The card falls in the set's third print series and depicts him with the Oakland Athletics, a season that established him as an everyday fixture in the Oakland outfield.

Robert James Monday Jr. was the first overall pick in the inaugural 1965 MLB draft, signed by the Kansas City Athletics out of Arizona State, where he had led the Sun Devils to the 1965 College World Series title. A center fielder, he broke into the majors in September 1966 and went on to play 19 big league seasons for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, finishing his career with 241 home runs and a .264 average. A two-time All-Star, he reached the postseason with two different clubs and won a World Series with the Dodgers in 1981, highlighted by his pennant-clinching home run in Game 5 of that year's NLCS. Off the field he is remembered for a 1976 incident at Dodger Stadium in which he grabbed an American flag from two protesters trying to burn it on the field, an act that drew a phone call from President Gerald Ford. After retiring as a player he moved into the Dodgers broadcast booth, where he has called games for decades.
