1968 Topps #104 Dick Dietz
The trophy on this card marks Dietz's selection to the 1967 Topps All-Star Rookie Team.

About Dick Dietz
By his 1968 Topps card, Dietz was still splitting catching duty in San Francisco, this time with Jack Hiatt and Bob Barton, after Haller was traded to the Dodgers that February. He was behind the plate for Gaylord Perry's no-hitter against St. Louis that September, and was at the center of a famous umpiring dispute when he was denied first base after being hit by a pitch during Don Drysdale's record scoreless-innings streak.
Richard Allen Dietz was a catcher who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1973, mostly with the San Francisco Giants. Signed as an amateur free agent out of South Carolina before the 1960 season, he broke in with the Giants in June 1966 and worked his way from backup duty behind Tom Haller into the regular catching job by 1970. That year he set career highs across the board, batting .300 with 22 home runs and 107 runs batted in, and he made the National League All-Star team, hitting a game-tying homer off Catfish Hunter in the ninth inning. He caught every game down the stretch as the Giants won the NL West in 1971 before losing to Pittsburgh in the League Championship Series. Claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1972, he closed out his career with Los Angeles and Atlanta, finishing 1973 with a strong reserve season for the Braves. He retired with a .261 career average and later managed in the minor leagues.
