1968 Topps #35 Steve Hargan

About Steve Hargan
Card number 35, print series 1, follows a 1967 in which Hargan was rated among the American League's best pitchers by Brooks Robinson and led the league in shutouts. He opened 1968 strong for Cleveland with a one-hit shutout of Detroit and a three-hit shutout of Minnesota, but worsening elbow pain limited him to occasional cortisone shots to keep pitching, and he finished the season 8-15 with a 4.15 ERA after losing his rotation spot in June.
Steve Hargan was a hard-throwing right-hander from Fort Wayne, Indiana, who signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1961 after a tryout at Municipal Stadium and worked his way up through five minor league stops, sharpening a slider under instruction from Hal Newhouser along the way. He debuted with Cleveland in August 1965 and settled into the rotation the following year. His best stretch came in 1967, when he opened the season with back-to-back shutouts, made his only All-Star team, and led the American League with six shutouts despite pitching through tendinitis. Arm trouble, including an ankle fracture and later carpal tunnel syndrome, shadowed the rest of his career. He remained with Cleveland through 1972, sat out the 1973 season, then pitched for the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1977 before finishing that final year with brief stops in Toronto and Atlanta.
