About this card

Thirty Rookie Stars cards carry two players each on a horizontal front. The class is headlined by the two Hall of Fame rookies, #177 Nolan Ryan (with Jerry Koosman) and #247 Johnny Bench (with Ron Tompkins), with #384 Hal McRae (with Bill Henry) the other rookie card collectors chase.

The story on this card

Baltimore traded Piniella back to the Cleveland organization in March 1966, and he spent the next three seasons with the Pacific Coast League's Portland Beavers. Cleveland brought him up late in 1968 for six games, going hitless in five at-bats with one RBI. Card #16 in the first series pairs him with Richie Scheinblum on a Rookie Stars front. The 1964 Senators card came first. The design also appears in the 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card game issue, which collectors identify by its yellow-tinged back. Rookie of the Year in 1969, an All-Star as a Royal, a two-time World Series champion as a Yankee and later manager of five clubs, Piniella collected 1,705 hits in 18 seasons and remains a Hall of Fame near-miss.

Coming off a .318 average in limited Cleveland action in 1967, Scheinblum spent most of 1968 back in the minors with Portland, where he hit .304 with a .479 slugging percentage, while going 12-for-55 for a .218 mark in his brief major league stint with the Indians. This card, from the first print series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with Cleveland teammate Lou Piniella. His rookie card was his 1965 issue. A switch-hitting outfielder for six major league clubs from 1965 to 1974, he made the 1972 American League All-Star team while batting .300 for the Kansas City Royals.
