1968 Topps #71 Vern Fuller

About Vern Fuller
1968 was Fuller's first full season as Cleveland's regular second baseman, a role he took over after splitting the prior year between the Indians and the Triple-A Portland Beavers. His 1968 Topps card, #71, is a first-series issue, and it is his rookie card, showing him with the Indians. He never hit higher than .242 in the majors, and 1968 was part of that modest offensive stretch even as he held the everyday job in the field.
Vernon Gordon Fuller, born March 1, 1944, was a right-handed-batting second and third baseman who spent his entire six-season major league career with the Cleveland Indians. A graduate of Canoga Park High School in Southern California, he attended what is now California State University, Northridge and Arizona State University before signing with Cleveland in 1963. He split that first pro season between Class A and Double-A ball, then spent all of 1964 on Cleveland's roster, though a stint on the disabled list kept him off the field until early September. His major league debut came as a pinch hitter on September 5, 1964, grounding out against Chicago's Joel Horlen. After returning to the minors for most of 1965 and 1966, Fuller split 1967 between the Indians and the Triple-A Portland Beavers before winning the regular second base job in 1968 and 1969. He lost that role to Eddie Leon in 1970, his final professional season, finishing with 182 career hits, 33 doubles, four triples and 14 home runs in 325 games.
